DANDRUFF AND DRY SCALP

The sebaceous glands secrete the oily substance called sebum that helps the hair to slip out of the hair crater and protects the hair from external damage. In people with greasy hair, the sebaceous glands work too actively and produce more sebum than needed. The production of sebum is stimulated by male hormones (androgens) and increases up to five times during puberty in men and one week prior to menstruation in women. Oily hair collects dust and residue. Excessive sebum production can be triggered by several factors such as hormonal disorders, malnutrition, stress, chemical and mechanical factors and external influences. SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS

Seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff is an eczematous process that causes the skin to flake mainly on the scalp, face, joint flexions and upper body. The exact cause is not known but recent studies name the combination of yeast fungus (Pityrosporum ovale), weakened immune system, infections that occur due to the use of some medicines and male hormones (androgens) that stimulate the sebaceous glands. The symptoms include flaking, redness, dryness or oiliness of the skin. For some people the symptoms are localized only to the scalp and face. The spots often appear symmetrical and are not itchy.
